I Was Going to Get So Much Done This Weekend

I Was Going to Get So Much Done This Weekend

Brunch with my family, a challenging workout, groceries and laundry for this week, Saturday night out with friends...not to mention working on the sequel to Heartstone, which is coming out later this year. All that and more was on my to do list for this past weekend, but it did not go as planned.

Instead, I woke up Thursday morning with a sore throat, and by Saturday both Hubs and I were down for the count. That's how it felt: like a cold had delivered a knock-out punch straight to my face. Instead of my productive and social weekend, we spent 48 hours straight on the couch in various states of alertness. There was nothing to do but watch a thousand movies, including a super cute rom-com that I think y'all will love.

Who among us hasn't cried in a bathroom stall? Dom (David Johnson) and Yas (Vivian Oparah) meet at an art show when she hears him weeping over videos of his ex-girlfriend. It's embarrassing, but weirdly bonding, and soon they find themselves sharing the stories of their recent breakups as they wander through their South London neighborhood. The surroundings are as colorful and electric as their dialogue, and over the course of a day they change how they view each other and themselves.

This movie is so, so charming. Dom and Yas are old enough to be adults, but still young enough to be surprised by what they are capable of doing. Neither of them has life figured out yet, but they are determined to make their own way. The setting matches their energy: there's no stillness in the city, and there's always something interesting or funny going on in the background. It's a colorful, vibrant, gritty world where anything can and does happen. The film-making is creative and dynamic, especially in the sequences where Dom and Yas recount their breakups in flashback. It almost feels like a comic book. All the stylistic flourishes only add to the sparkling chemistry between the leads, which brews slowly and unevenly but comes to a satisfying boil. I highly recommend this movie and I think you should check it out.
